Virginia A. Schaefer Resident of Benicia Virginia, 81, passed away April 25. She was born and raised in Berkeley, and spent many years living in Contra Costa County before moving to Benicia 15 years ago. She also enjoyed her second home in Bodega Bay. A gifted teacher, she will be remembered by hundreds of former students from gifted and talented summer schools and at Mt. Diablo Unified School District’s Science Center. Her instructional methods expanded the minds and appreciation for science for all her students. She also supervised student teachers several years through UC Berkeley and finished her career working in the MDUSD homeschool program. Virginia enjoyed flying her 1947 Stinson airplane all over the US. It can still be seen at Buchanan Field Airport to which she donated it after years of service on the aviation advisory committee. She traveled extensively in six continents. She had an amateur radio license for around 60 years. Her parents Edward and Virginia Reinke, brother, Charles Reinke, and half sister Pat Griffin preceded her. She will be lovingly remembered by children Theresa Jenson of Oakridge, OR, Cassandra Girard of Silverado CA, and Nicholas Schaefer of Sterling, CO, grandchildren Angelina Godchaux, Melanie Lerman, Jaya Girard, Alex Schaefer, Natalie Schaefer, and great grandson Isiah River Godchaux. A celebration will be held at a later time. Memorials in her honor may be made to savemountdiablo.org Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, 707-745-3130, passalacquafuneral chapel.com
